About Us

Our aim at the Prickleback Hedgehog Rescue is to provide a rescue, treatment and rehabilitation service to relieve the suffering and distress of sick and injured hedgehogs, with the aim to release them back into the wild.

We predominately take hedgehogs from Rutland, Leicestershire and Lincolnshire with some coming from as far as Cambridgeshire. Hedgehogs are either admitted directly into our care or via a veterinary surgery. We are not veterinary professionals but rehabilitators and work closely with the veterinary team at Rutland Veterinary Centre in Oakham in order to provide appropriate care for each and every hedgehog.

Although we are a small home based rescue we are committed to ensuring a high standard of care. Currently wildlife rescue is an unregulated activity in England which is why we have decided to become part of the Wildlife Care Badge (WCB) scheme. The WCB is a ‘self-regulation scheme’ that enables us to prove that we meet the minimum requirements that are necessary to ethically rehabilitate wildlife as a species specific rescue.

Our premises, facilities, day to day practices and level of knowledge and understanding assessed. The WCB is not a static accreditation; we have to consistently prove that our practice continues to meet these standards.

We an associate organisation of the British Wildlife Rehabilitation Council (BWRC) and are committed to the 10 Principles of Wildlife Rehabilitation induced in 2025. Our rescue is registered with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society.
